Project Overview:

YouTube Live

Winner of 3 Webby Awards including Best Event and Peoples Voice Best Event.

Engaged as Associated Producer/Technical Supervisor for this first-ever live web streaming event for YouTube. This large-scale event, produced and streamed live from San Francisco, was part concert, part variety show, and part party brought to life many of the diverse talent that have been made popular by YouTube.

This was a multi-stream live web event, with simultaneous creation of highlight VOD clips to support the web site post-show. YouTube Live reached approximately 1 million concurrent stream views and more than 40 million on-demand clip views from 48 countries.

As Associated Producer/Technical Supervisor, Steve oversaw not only the technical aspects of the event production coverage, including cameras, sound, satellite, venue PA, and power, but also the web site development and the live streaming, site hosting, and live video stream encoding.

Fully redundant site hosting, stream encoding, and content distribution was architected for a fail-safe live event, with encoding from video done at two locations. For the three live streams being originated, each at 3 bitrates plus a low-resolution thumbnail for the website, including redundancy, a total of 60 encoded flash streams were being created and managed for the event.

For the Web site, a custom flash player was built to include three streamed thumbnails that allowed selection of any of the three video feeds that were being streamed. Since this was a web-only event, in a unique approach, some production elements were pushed off the produced live video feed and onto the web page, so an Alert ticker and a "Coming Up" banner were designed into the web page and controlled in real time from the production truck as additional production elements.
